The Railroads

Many different railroads have served York County throughout the years. These railroads ranged from small connecting or farmers railroads such as the New Park & Fawn Grove Railroad up to the large, national systems such as Conrail.

Several railroads currently serve the York area.

The York Railway Company, formed by a recent merger of the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad and Yorkrail, is a local shortline with trackage between York and Hanover.

Class 1 railroads Norfolk Southern and CSX interchange with York Railway Company in York, Porters and Hanover, and both lines serve customers in York County as well.

The Stewartstown Railroad still exists between it's namesake town and New Freedom, but only as a tourist/excursion railroad, as it has no direct rail connection to the outside world.

Previous railroads to serve York County include the Western Maryland, Pennsylvania Railroad (and later Penn Central and Conrail), the York, Hanover & Gettysburg Railway and other smaller railroad companies.

Watch for this page to expand as I gather information on these and other railroads.
